NOMAD™ Portable Hand-Held X-Rays

Now true portability in x-ray technology! The NOMAD offers cordless operation, running on rechargeable battery packs with more than 100 exposures on one battery charge. Optimal for remote use, the NOMAD is contained in an easily transportable case with pull-out handle and wheels. Perfect for humanitarian & missionary work.

FEATURES:

  • High-frequency, constant-potential x-ray generator provides constant radiation output, reducing skin dose to the patient relative to traditional half-wave (AC) generators.
  • Ease of operation - Fixed high voltage (60kV) and Current (2.3mA) - the only operator input is the exposure time.
Very lightweight - less than 9 lbs (4kg) and provides complete flexibility and convenience to move from chair to chair throughout the office.
  • Compatible with both film and digital imaging systems.
Operator Protection - External backscatter shield and internal radiation shielding protects the operator from radiation exposure.
  • The ARU-06 system includes two rechargeable battery packs, backscatter shield, battery charger, transport case, and NOMAD x-ray.
  • System is also available without the transport case and the option of a 220 volt battery charger.
    FDA Approved

True Portability
Unlike other "portable" x-ray instruments, the battery powered NOMAD™ Dental offers true portability with cordless operation and freedom from line voltage fluctuation. With more than 100 exposures on one battery charge and a weight of under 4 kg, NOMAD™ Dental is optimal for remote use and confined spaces as well as operatory functions.

Operator Protection
The external backscatter shield and internal radiation shielding protect the operator from radiation exposure.

Constant Potential Performance
The high-frequency, constant potential x-ray generator provides constant radiation output. This improves image quality while reducing the skin dose to the patient relative to traditional half-wave (AC) generators.

Ease of Operation
The lightweight NOMAD™ Dental is designed for simple operation. The only operator input needed is the exposure time, which is entered on the user-friendly digital control panel. NOMAD™ Dental is compatible with both traditional x-ray film and digital sensors, making it easy for you and easy for the patient.

More Convenience - Less Cost
Because the NOMAD™ Dental Cordless Handheld X-ray System is completely portable, just one can replace multiple wall-mounted x-ray sources.

FAQ

Q. Can you safely hold an x-ray tube in your hand?
A. No, you can't! The NOMAD™ is not just a tube in hand, however, but a self-contained x-ray system including internal shielding to protect the user from direct tube exposure and an external scatter shield that absorbs direct backscattered radiation from the patient. See the Radiation Safety Report which contains data from a third party study from the UL. You will see that the radiation exposure from leakage and backscatter radiation is far below federal and occupational limits. NOMAD™ is safe.

Q. Can you take clear x-rays holding the unit in your hand?
A. Yes. All the experience and data show that hand-held is steady enough to produce diagnostic quality x-rays. We have put clinical x-rays on our website for your review. It is not an issue, really, and an aiming guide is usually not even necessary. This makes NOMAD™ very...handy!

Q. Does it work with film and digital imaging media?
A. Yes, NOMAD™ is designed to work equally well with both. Usually digital sensors take about one tenth the exposure time. NOMAD™ also works well with phosphor plate systems, too.

Q. How many x-ray exposures does it take on one battery charge?
A. It depends on the length of the exposures, but under the most difficult conditions it does 100 or more exposures. Typically, 200 to 300 is easily achievable under normal circumstances and two batteries and a charger are included with each instrument. A full charge takes about 30 to 40 minutes. The battery manufacturer indicates that the battery can be fully cycled about 100 times.

Q. How much does NOMAD™ weigh?
A. NOMAD™ weighs just over 8 lbs, including the battery and scatter shield. This is almost the same as a half-gallon carton of milk, or medium size laptop. It is easier to wield with two hands while squeezing the trigger.

Q. Is this not too heavy for some female technicians to hold?
A. A subjective question, but most (~95+%) of the women who have held it at shows and tests feel it is manageable. The real question is can one do full-mouth-panels with NOMAD™ all day? A recent test indicated that about a half-dozen could be comfortably done per day by the same female technician, in addition to the other bite-wings and x-rays needed during the course of the day. NOMAD™ speeds up the process for the tech and is more comfortable for the patient who does not have to wait for the technician to leave/return from the room while biting down on the film. We wish to make it as light as possible, of course, but safety and efficacy comes first.

Q. Are the product specs comparable to conventional x-ray systems?
A. NOMAD™ operates at a fixed 60KV and 2.3mA - and it's DC. Its tube has a small anode spot (0.4mm) for good image resolution and it uses standard beam-filtering and cone hardware common to the dental trade. Check the product data sheet for all details.

Q. What is the price?
A. Our suggested retail price is $6848 USD and the pelican case is $465 USD. This is about 1 ½ times the suggested retail price of a quality DC wall-mounted x-ray unit. We feel that NOMAD™ can easily take the place of 2 to 3 conventional systems in clinical use and it has no match for field work. NOMAD™ comes with a one-year warranty for parts and labor.

Q. What regulatory requirements are needed to sell NOMAD™?
A. Aribex received FDA 510(k) clearance in July 2005 and the NOMAD is available for sale in the USA. We are currently building NOMAD™ dental units to be batch-tested for CE mark by an independent notified body (UL). CE mark is needed to sell NOMAD™ in Europe and countries around the world influenced by Europe. NOMAD™ should also receive UL and CSA certifications.
